Instrumentalists
Over the years we have come across most instruments that could be recorded, so regardless of whether you play the piano, the oboe, the bagpipes or the mouth organ, the chances are we have recorded it before at some point and will be able to help.
Recording different instruments, whether as a solo or part of an ensemble, requires that careful consideration is given to both the venue and microphone placement to ensure the recording does full justice to the instrument.
Our “multi mic” technique for recordings is equally applicable to instrumental recordings as it is for larger ensembles such as orchestras and choirs. However with instrumentalists, regardless of whether that is a single instrument or one with an accompaniment (oboe and piano for example), it is not simply a case of just putting up every single microphone available. We have many different types of microphone, each of which has a specific purpose and will work better with one instrument compared to another.
For example we would mic up a piano very differently to a trumpet and be using different types of microphone. Techniques also vary from one venue to another and in accordance with the style of the music being played. A jazz pianist will often require a slightly different acoustic to a classical pianist and the microphone placement also needs to reflect this.
Generally an instrumental recording would start with a session and then could develop into a demo disc or a full retail CD depending on your requirements. Session recordings start from £500 per day.
