Organists
To correctly record a church or cathedral organ presents quite a challenge especially in Cathedrals where the instrument will often be located quite high off the ground. This is where our multiple micing techniques come into their own as we record both the instrument and the acoustic to ensure we can recreate as faithfully as possible the sound of the organ and the building in which it resides.
Anyone who has ever been walking round a Cathedral whilst the organ is being played will know just how different the organ can sound in various parts of the building. To us this is part of our research and before we record any organ our engineers will spend time listening to the instrument from different angles to work out the optimum microphone placements. Having our own in-house professional organist helps on these occasions!
As with all of our recordings we always keep our sound engineers and rig outside of the recording space, which in Cathedrals can involve cable-runs of several hundred metres. We also have a wide range of very tall microphone stands (upwards of 40 feet in some cases) as well as some custom designed equipment that enables us to correctly place microphones in even the most demanding environments.
