One of the most eagerly anticipated recordings in the first half of 2016 was our trip to Yorkshire to record the Penistone Ladies Choir. This recording had been about 18 months in the planning stage and there were high hopes on all sides of creating a rather special CD.
About Penistone Ladies Choir
Penistone Ladies Choir was formed in 1986 in the market town of Penistone, on the south-eastern edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire.
Under the leadership of their Musical Director, Jane Hobson, the choir has grown over the past year to over 50 members. They enjoy singing a wide repertoire of songs from classical, religious, folk and contemporary styles, all ably accompanied by Yvonne Woffenden, the Choir’s accompanist of many years.
The Recording Session
Showing true Yorkshire hospitality, the Ladies arranged for me to stay overnight at the 3 Acres Inn, Shelley which aside of great accommodation also had an award winning restaurant! The recording itself was carried out over a couple of days. The first session was on the Friday evening followed by an all day session on the Saturday.
This is often a good way to record adult choirs as it reduces the need to give up an entire weekend. The 3 hours on Friday were extremely productive and meant we had a good head start for the recording on Saturday. By mid afternoon, due to the excellent preparation of Penistone Ladies Choir, the recording was in the can.
The CD – Happy Together, is available to purchase for £10 from Penistone Ladies Choir by visiting their website.
