5 Easy Piano Songs For Young Kids

Thornton College Piano

Childhood is ideal time to start learning a musical instrument such as the piano. When kids’ minds are still developing, they’re able to take in new information without questioning things too much in the same way an adult would.

That being said, teaching piano to very young children does require the right type of approach. The most important thing for a child who’s learning the piano is that it’s fun. One of the best ways to make learning the piano a fun experience for a child is to pick out songs that they recognise and will be able to play fairly easily. With this in mind, below are some of the best easy piano songs for young children.

1. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

This children’s classic is one of the best places to start when teaching your child a song to play on the piano. It’s extremely simple to play and fun too. Played in the key of C, it consists of only 6 notes, many of which are repeated twice. This makes it a great song to familiarise your child with the white notes in a way that’s fun and rewarding. There are several great videos on YouTube that show how to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the piano.

2. Mary Had A Little Lamb

Another ideal song to start your child off with when playing the piano is Mary Had a Little Lamb. The reason that this is such a great starting song is because it contains so few notes, making it easy for even very young children to grasp.

The song contains just few lines and four notes. Be sure to encourage your child as they’re playing by singing along with them. Again, this song doesn’t contain any black keys so it’s a great one to start your child off with.

3. If You’re Happy and You Know It

This song is great for young children since it gives them the chance to clap whilst they’re playing the piano too, making it that much more fun. It’s an ideal song to learn after Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star since it uses all the same notes except for one, the Bb. This song is great because it gives you the chance to introduce playing a black note as part of a song in a very gentle and unintimidating way. Be sure to make it as fun as possible by clapping along yourself when you’re teaching your child.

4. The Itsy Bitsy Spider

This is another very simple song that contains just 5 notes. It’s great for young children since they usually love the song and playing it is very fun for them.

5. Old MacDonald Had A Farm

This is one of those songs that your young child will really love playing over and over again. It’s a very simple song to learn and even young children are usually able to pick it up very quickly. The great thing about this song is that it encourages long practice since the singing part can be adapted to all the animals on a farm.
